MONTHLY AUTOMOBILE TIPS

» Do not drink and drive, and do not allow your guests to drink and drive. Appoint a designated driver or call a cab. Because alcohol is the No. 1 contributor to highway traffic deaths, your actions may help save a life or prevent injuries. Remember, all 50 states have laws that prohibit driving while impaired with alcohol.

» Do not drive while drowsy. On long trips, build in ample time for breaks, and, if possible, share driving responsibilities

» Make sure your car is in good shape for summer.

» Be prepared. Keep emergency supplies in your car such as flares and hazard signs in case of a breakdown or flat. If your car overheats, let the engine cool and call for service; otherwise you risk damaging the vehicle. Make sure there's a jack in the car and that the spare is properly inflated. Pull completely off the road and avoid exiting the side of the vehicle facing traffic.

» If you are in your car during a lightning storm, the vehicle's metal cage will conduct a charge into the ground and help protect you. Do not attempt to leave the vehicle and run for cover.

» Never leave children unattended in a vehicle, even for a few moments. On a warm, sunny day, a vehicle can heat up to potentially lethal levels in minutes.

MONTHLY HOMEOWNER'S TIPS

  1. Clean out gutters and downspouts. Remove debris and flush with a hose.

  2. Prune back tree branches and shrubs that are too close to the house.

  3. Check driveways and other paved surfaces for cracks and signs of deterioration.

  4. Check and repair or replace exterior caulking (we can never say it enough).

  5. Clean lint from the clothes dryer venting system. It can be a fire hazard.

  6. Reset auto-light timers for the longer days ahead.

  7. Check window weep holes and remove any clogs.

  8. Have a professional check your roof for any damage done over the winter months.

  9. Check your air conditioner and schedule needed maintenance before peak use periods.

  10. Have a fireplace? Now’s a good time to hire a pro to inspect and clean the chimney. Ask him to install a screen over the chimney top to keep debris out.

  11. Clean wood decks and reseal as needed.

  12. Check and replace rubber washers on exterior faucet.
